First Spiritualist Church of Rhode Island

By Ellen Reilly

At First Spiritualist Church of Rhode Island, in East Providence, Reverend Susan Robillard and her husband, Ernie Robillard, help each person discover their own understanding of God, the Divine and Spirit through the science, philosophy and religion of Spiritualism. The atmosphere is one of sharing, where everyone is considered important and encouraged to participate in the interactive service and contribute to making everyone’s life more positive.

The church strives for quality over a lot of repetitive quantity experiences that don’t result in personal growth. Readings from visiting mediums provide substance each week, as do lessons in recognizing opportunities in everyday life to further one’s spiritual journey and potential. With a congregation from a wide variety of backgrounds, the energy created is electrifying, and some travel hours each Sunday to attend the service and share friendly conversation with others over “coffee hour” at the conclusion of the service.

Most importantly, the Robillards are willing to listen to all individuals’ concerns and suggest different ways to help them reach resolutions and find a new direction. This atmosphere of caring and community love is why the church is beginning to thrive and expand; they have even started a food pantry for people in need.

Sunday services take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and individuals are invited to attend to learn about the wisdom and knowledge of the Masters, soak up the rays from the John of God crystal healing bed, take a workshop from a visiting medium, find new ways to create better family relationships, or simply join the fun in making new friends and starting a new adventure.

First Spiritualist Church of Rhode Island is located at 83 S. Rose St., East Providence. For more information, visit
